About Us

A place that feels like home…

Ronald McDonald House® Maritimes helps families with ill or injured children stay together and near the medical care they need.

Our programs include Ronald McDonald House®, a “home away from home” for out-of-town families with sick children, and two Ronald McDonald House Family Room® Programs, offering an oasis of calm and support inside the hospital.

Ronald McDonald House Maritimes is a non-profit organization. We depend upon charitable donations and volunteer support from many individuals, corporations and foundations to fulfill our mission. We receive no operational funding from government.

Our History

Since opening our doors in Halifax in May 1982, Ronald McDonald House has helped an estimated 30,000+ families that have stayed with us when they had to travel to Halifax for medical treatment. Our House is one of 16 Houses across Canada and one of more than 360 around the world.

In 2007, we opened the first Ronald McDonald House Family Room in Canada at the IWK Health Centre in Halifax and in 2011 we opened a second Family Room at the Moncton Hospital. Today, there are 15 Ronald McDonald House Family Room Programs in hospitals across the country, with more expected to open due to an unprecedented demand from hospitals, and a growing focus on family-centred care.

In April, 2025, we opened the doors to our new Ronald McDonald House, expanding capacity to support 36 families at a time. The new House, located directly across the street from the IWK Health Centre in Halifax, provides modern, spacious, and a variety of programming spaces for families to heal together near their ill or injured child.

In October, 2025, we changed our charity name from RMHC Atlantic to Ronald McDonald House Maritimes, to reflect the communities we support and those who support us.
